Tornado Alley - Leveling Knoxville!
(Bill W) Special Edition, July 3, 2008 - Billy Alley completed another sensational drive at the Knoxville Raceway last Saturday night with his second win of the season. The victory allowed him to narrow the point gap between himself and point leader Danny Lasoski in the 410 class. This week, he'll try to take home a pair of wins on Twin Features night at Knoxville.
After registering the 8th quick time of the night and cruising through his heat race (3rd), Billy lined up inside row three in the main event.
“We’re really taking great advantage of our starting spots, but we need to step it up qualifying for the big shows," says the Lincoln, Nebraska native. "Eighth quick isn’t going to cut it when there isn't an invert."
Billy chased Dion Hindi into lapped traffic for nineteen laps, and made his winning move in a similar fashion to what victimized him one week before while he was leading. “It was like déjà vu all over again," says the 2006 Knoxville Raceway champion of his pass for the lead. "It’s a lot easier when you are running second there and can see it unfold in front of you. When you’re in front, you don’t know how hard you need to push it to stay in front. I know it is a cliché, but it’s true.”
Billy knows he was fortunate in traffic. His slider on Hindi on lap twenty, saw the two almost make contact. Hindi never lifted off the cushion coming out of turn two, but Billy came out unscathed! “Dion ran a great race; he just spun in the middle a couple of times when he was trying to get through traffic," he says. "We were able to take advantage.
That slider was wild! He didn’t lift and I tried to give him a little room there, but it was close!”
Billy is complimentary of all the help that SA Racing receives. “I have some awesome people behind me," he states. "I’d love to thank Craig Bolz (Bolz Farms), he was a big help this week.”

Tornado Alley – Two Laps Short!
(Bill W) June 26, 2008 – Billy Alley has been involved in some terrific racing action in 2008 and Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, he was in the middle of it again. For the fourth consecutive 410 feature race at the famous half-mile, the lead changed hands in the last three laps. Unfortunately, Billy wishes that streak had been broken, as he lost a bid for his second win there in lapped traffic. Still a solid second in the Knoxville points race, the 2006 track champion will try it again this weekend after visiting the Junction Motor Speedway near McCool Junction, Nebraska for some Friday ASCS-Midwest action.
Billy timed in 8th quick on Saturday night. Qualifying is something he’s trying to improve. “I think we’ve been timing in in the right spot for the most part,” he says. “I’m not trying to do that…we’re trying to be faster. We’re still off in that aspect and when the Outlaws come, if we aren’t better, we’ll have a tough go of it.”
After running third in his heat race, he posted inside of row two for the 20-lap feature event. After leader Travis Cram could not avoid an incident with a lapped car on lap eight, Billy lined up behind Lynton Jeffrey for the restart. He was able to work by him in turns three and four and set sail ahead of the pack. With two laps to go and coming for the white flag, he approached the lapped car of Seth Brahmer in turns three and four. Billy decided he would shoot around the high side. “Seth was going through the middle and I had to make a decision,” he remembers. “He just as easily could have gone to the bottom as the top. The corner before, he entered in the middle and stayed there. Even if he slid up, I didn’t think he was going all the way to the cushion, but he did.”
Caught behind the slower marker, Billy was freight-trained on the bottom by Danny Lasoski and Dion Hindi resulting in a third place run. Knoxville experimented with a Hoosier 25 on the right rear for everyone, and despite leading most of the race, Billy is concerned the locals will be at more of a disadvantage in the big shows. “The reason I don’t like it, is that I don’t believe the traveling series will ever go to it,” he says. “I think that will hurt the local driver in the long run. If everyone would switch to it, it wouldn’t be so bad. It does free the car up and make it harder to drive, which is good because the best driver will benefit. It would change the car a lot, and that really puts a guy behind when they go run with the Outlaws.”
There was disappointment in the American Sprint Cars on Tour show Friday night at Knoxville. Though he made the feature, Billy pulled off shortly after the green flag fell. “The motor just wasn’t running all night,” he relates. “Mark Burch helped us to find some fuel issues this week, so hopefully that’s ironed out. Knoxville is a lot different than Belleville (where Billy won on June 15), because at Belleville, your rpm never drop. At Knoxville, we ran into problems with the fuel and spark plugs, and it wouldn’t fire off a cylinder. We were just behind the 8-ball and it cost us.”
Billy headed to Huset’s on Sunday night and recorded the 2nd quickest time of the night. After missing the feature invert by one spot in his heat race, he lined up 14th for the main event. He was quick on the cushion and was threatening for a top five late in the race. “You have to be able to run all over at that place, and we weren’t fast enough on the bottom on Sunday,” he remembers. “I was really fast on the cushion, but if I got off, I was struggling. Even though you’re faster, you can’t drive through them up there, you have to be able to operate down low, and that’s where we struggled. Then I hit the fence with two laps to go (running 6th), and the tire started going down. I finished taking the checkers with a flat tire.”
Billy looks forward to hitting McCool Junction on Friday before another Saturday at Knoxville. “We always have pretty good luck there,” he says. “The cars have been feeling great, so hopefully we can get the motor running. McCool Junction is a huge momentum racetrack, and we want to keep that momentum going. We’re getting going at the right time.”

Ken in Stuart, IA asks: You seem to be getting more comfortable in the JEI chassis. Is that due to adjustments you’ve made on the car, or just getting comfortable with the way it rides?
Billy answers: Both. The car is setup a lot different than anything I’ve ever driven. It definitely feels different, and the way we have the racecar setup makes me comfortable. Someone else may not be, but it makes me feel good when getting up to speed. We’ll keep on making little changes and improve on where we’re at.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has two wins at the Junction Motor Speedway. Both came in Eagle Sprint Touring Series action in 2004. In May, he beat Rodney Droud, Mike Chadd, JD Johnson and Mike Boston. In July, he bested Jason Danley, Don Droud Jr., Rodney Droud and Eric Jobe. He also has two impressive second place finishes in the 410 at the facility. In NCRA/SCOA racing in 2004 he finished behind Jason Johnson and ahead of Patrick Bourke, Jerrod Hull and Rich Bubak. With the All Stars in 2005, he finished second to Chad Kemenah, and ahead of Roger Crockett, Danny Smith and Randy Hannagan.

Tornado Alley – High Banks Bully!
(Bill W) June 19, 2008 – The SA Racing #22 team and driver Billy Alley were a force last weekend, whether it was in a 410 or a 360. After a pair of strong 410 runs at Huset’s Speedway and Knoxville Raceway, Billy took the 360 to the Belleville High Banks in Kansas on Sunday night and brought the winning hardware home to Lincoln, Nebraska. This weekend, he’ll be racing both cars at Knoxville. Friday, the American Sprint Cars on Tour visit, while Saturday he’ll try to improve one spot on his second place standing in the Knoxville Championship Cup Series 410 standings.
The Kansas high banks at Belleville have intimidated plenty over the years. Breakneck speeds on the ½ mile are not for the leery. For Billy, the Sunday night NCRA foray was all about mashing the gas, as he led every lap of his heat and the main event. “We were fast there, but really lucky at the same time,” he says. “We were able to win the heat from outside row one, and got to start on the pole of the feature. We raced side by side with JD Johnson for a couple of laps, and took the lead. After that, the car kind of drove itself. It was fun.”
Crew Chief Bob ‘Buns’ Richardson related a story to Billy that repeated itself Sunday. “‘Buns’ raced there back with Doug Wolfgang in the day, and Doug won the race and came in and when ‘Buns’ asked him if he lifted, Doug said, ‘Twice…once for myself and once for the car.’ I told him the same thing when I came in Sunday,” says Billy. The win was worth $2000 and was the second of the season and the second in just over two weeks.
After a couple of rough and tumble contests with the World of Outlaws the week prior, confidence was not sky high heading into last Friday’s race with the best in the business at South Dakota’s Huset’s Speedway. Billy timed in 16th quick, before failing to get through his heat into a transfer. After a dominating performance in the B, he lined up outside row eight for the 35-lap main event. “We kept getting stronger as the night went on,” he says. “Every time we get this car out, we’re getting closer and closer with it. We’ve changed a lot since we first started with it. As I get more comfortable, it starts to get driven the way it’s supposed to be driven.”
Billy surged forward into 13th, staying on the tail of Steve Kinser. The pair was lapped by the leaders before a late restart. Despite getting by two more competitors and crossing the line 11th, Billy was scored in 13th since he was a lap down to the leader. Nonetheless, it was a good run. “I really felt the best I have ever felt with the Outlaws,” he relates. “I know I’ve finished in the top five at Knoxville with them, but that was our best run in a long time. We held our own, and didn’t get walked over like we had been lately. We can build on that.”
The good run with the WoO at Huset’s and a win on May 26 at Knoxville, set Billy up for more success on Saturday. After registering the 8th quick time of the night, he put on an impressive performance in winning his heat from outside row two. Starting sixth in the main event, he worked his way up to the top three early and maintained his standing before eventual winner Mark Dobmeier got by him. He worked back to third, but a late restart allowed Lynton Jeffrey to drive by him on the low side, relegating him to fourth at the checkers. “I screwed up a bit there in the feature,” says Billy. “The only thing we changed after the heat was gear and tightened it up a bit. We went a little too deep on gear, but we were good on the bottom. I should have stayed down there and I didn’t. It’s hard to stay down there when someone (Mark Dobmeier) passes you, and there wasn’t much left down there.”
Billy is in second place in the Knoxville Championship Cup Standings at Knoxville at this stage, and seems to be up front wherever the SA Racing #22 team tows. “Racing a lot gets a guy in a comfort zone, and the cars are rolling around there pretty good right now,” he says. “Hopefully, we can continue the consistency. This week, I’d like to thank Buss Excavating and Schmit Automotive for all their help. We can’t thank them enough!”
Stop down and say “Hello!” this week at Knoxville.

Rod from Bloomington, MN asks: Congratulations on your win last week at Knoxville. I’ve never driven a sprint car. What is it like, and is there anything you can compare it to?
Billy answers: It’s a huge adrenaline rush. Once you do it for awhile, those lessen and you concentrate on winning. After awhile, you don’t notice the forces and speed so much. That takes a bit of the fun out of it, if you don’t win! It is a lot of fun because they’re so radical, but that’s not what it’s about anymore. Sometimes you need to remember how fun it is. If you crash, there’s a point where you realize you’re not in control, and that’s kind of a weird feeling. Sometimes it hurts a little bit when you hit the ground too.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has performed well on the ASCS National stage at Knoxville. In nine starts, he has five wins. All have come in the 360 Nationals against the best competition (3 preliminaries and 2 finals). In 2004, he beat Wayne Johnson, Terry McCarl, Jason Johnson and Jake Peters in the finale, and in 2005, it was Gary Wright, Brian Brown, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Dusty Zomer who were in tow.

Billy in Victory Lane at Belleville (IBRACN Photo)
Bill W Media Monroe, IA USA sprntcar@iowatelecom.netTornado Alley – Preparation Meets Opportunity!
(Bill W) June 5, 2008 – As Billy Alley celebrated with his team and family on Saturday night in Victory Lane at the Knoxville Raceway, a great weight was lifted from his shoulders. The longest draught between wins of his short career had been quenched. The SA Racing Team formed last Winter, and in just their fourteenth start had beaten some of the best in the business at Knoxville Raceway.
An early pill for time trials helped the Lincoln, Nebraska sprint car driver to sixth quick, even though you could have fooled him when he exited his JEI chassis. “After time trials, I was in a pretty foul mood,” he says. “I really turned a horrific lap out there. I would have bet $100,000 that it wasn’t going to hold up for sixth quick. I thought it was going to be another ‘start in the back night.’”
Lining up in the third row of his heat, he was able to hang on to the final transfer (sixth) by the skin of his teeth, thanks to a late move to seal off Brooke Tatnell. “We changed some things for the heat race, but that didn’t help much. We had a chance to get into fourth there at one point, but I screwed up and fell back to sixth. I was battling (Seth) Brahmer (for fifth) and I could see Brooke’s white car once in awhile and I could hear him. There was a lap in there where I kind of chopped him a little bit. It was one of those things that wasn’t real dirty, but it ended up being the move of the night that I needed to win the main event. I don’t think it was anything he wouldn’t have done in my position.”
Another stroke of luck came in the fact that the format called for three heats and not four. “Normally, they’ve been taking five out of the heats, so we were lucky this was a week that they took six,” says Billy. “Everything seemed to work out for me that way on that night. One of my favorite quotes is, ‘Luck is Preparation Meeting the Moment of Opportunity’. Saturday was that moment.”
Billy’s luck continued when quick timer Davey Heskin pulled a six for the feature inversion, lining him up outside row one. “We were lucky to start on the front row,” he says. “Randy (Anderson) started on the bottom, and the bottom was really good again. He used it to his advantage and kind of drove off. I kind of settled in behind him, and he missed his mark a couple times and I took advantage.”
The pass for the point came on the sixth lap, and Billy pulled away a bit. “I was able to set sail a little bit, and was able to get through lapped traffic pretty well,” he explains. “There were a couple of close calls, but we got through there. I was able to get out there pretty good with the track the way it was, and all the clean air. I knew there were some fast cars behind me. I was getting a little bit anxious at the halfway point. I knew I missed my marks a couple times, and I didn’t know how close everyone else was.”
On lap fourteen, the only caution of the race came out, and those fast cars pulled right up behind him. “With six to go, on that restart, I knew that I could only beat myself,” he says. “I had an awesome racecar under me. If I hit my marks, they weren’t going to get around me. I did miss them one time in those six laps, but luckily it was enough to win.”
A brief challenge from Dusty Zomer came a lap after the race had restarted. Billy blocked him and sealed the deal the rest of the way. “With the long wait we had, there was a little bit of doubt, there in the last few laps,” he says. “I kept waiting for someone to fly by me, some way, somehow, or something to go wrong, but it never did. Coming off turn four, I said to myself, ‘I’m actually going to win this race!’ I had to gather myself a bit, so I took my time on the victory lap. Then, I decided I better hurry my ass up and get to the scales!”
His first win with SA Racing partner Shane Sterling, Bob “Buns” Richardson, Allyn Shively and the rest of the boys was big. “That win was one of the most special in my career,” says Billy. “I’ve thought about it every day. I’d like to take this and run with it. It does a lot for a guy’s confidence. Winning in only the fourteenth time out with a new team is pretty cool. Getting that win out of the way this early in the season is big. People can tell you not to worry about it if you haven’t won, but if you are competitive, that’s all you think about. It seems like we’ve left the track 100 times without that feeling since the last win.”
Even though he struggled to find his way in 2007 after winning the track title in 2006, Billy doesn’t see it as a loss. “Last year may seem like a loss to some, but to me it was a great learning experience,” he says. “I got to race at a lot of racetracks, have a lot of laughs and learned a lot. To win at Knoxville is just plain tough anytime, but this year it is as tough as ever. This win was special for a lot of reasons.”
Billy and the team will see the competition heat up to an even higher pitch as the World of Outlaws visit Knoxville on Friday and Saturday. After a couple of Sundays off, the team will head to Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota on Sunday as well.

Phil Hastings from Seattle, WA asks: Billy you did a great job broadcasting the races on Friday night (Hoseheads Radio)! I love your stories. Did you have fun and do you get nervous?
Billy answers: Thanks, I had a blast! I actually don’t get nervous. I think I enjoy it too much. One thing I can say is it is a lot harder than it looks! When you sit by yourself, you may think it would be easy to announce a race, but when you are in the booth and you know people are listening…it may be nerve-wracking, because you don’t want to look like an idiot and make a mistake with a car. The Masters was a little bit tough because I didn’t know anybody. That made it tougher. I think the Outlaws would be easier, but of course, I’ll be racing!

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy’s wild celebrations at Knoxville were understandable. He had not tasted victory since August 15, 2006 at Nebraska Raceway Park. There, he drove Mark Burch’s #1m to an ASCS-Midwest win over Jeff Mitrisin, Justin Henderson, Rick Ideus and Mark Pace. His last Knoxville win came with Burch as well, on August 4 in a 360 National prelim, where he bested Brian Brown, Dustin Lindquist, Jason Johnson and Jesse Giannetto. The drought was by far the longest in his short career, both overall and at Knoxville.

Tornado Alley – Mind Games!
(Bill W) May 29, 2008 – A race driver’s mental state seems to ebb and flow depending on how things are going. Last week, sprint car driver “Tornado” Billy Alley drove a one-lane racetrack at Knoxville to a second place finish. This week he drove a one-lane racetrack at Knoxville to a fifteenth place finish. Track conditions, luck of the draw and Mother Nature had a lot to do with the finishes, but don’t tell that to a race driver striving to hit the top of the podium every night.
As with many things in life, too much focus it put on either the good or the bad side of things. Billy is a testament to that. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a one-lane track,” he says. “There’s somebody up front, and there’s a reason it isn’t you. I’m guessing (winner) Justin Henderson is about on cloud-nine this week.”
Maybe a mental break will help him heading into this weekend. “I took a couple of days off away from racing this week,” he says. “Maybe I needed that. I do a lot to take care of myself and those around me, but the last few days what I’ve been eating would make anyone sick.”
Despite what he sees as a terrible finish (15th in the 33 car field), Billy is still only 15 points out of third in the Knoxville 410 standings. “I really can’t believe we’re still that far up in the standings,” he overstates. “That must mean everyone else is having problems too. I think this is as high as we’ve been in the standings this time of year, and that includes ’06 (when he won the track championship).”
The “luck of the draw” factor was in play again last week at Knoxville. Over 1/2” of rain hit the area Saturday morning, and track crews worked all day to make the ½ mile oval race-worthy. The week before, sun and wind made track conditions the opposite, and Billy’s early pill draw in time trials was to his benefit. This week, an early draw yielded the opposite effect, and he registered the 20th quick time of the night. “Jack Dover went out before we did and had a good lap, so really that’s no excuse,” says Billy. In reality, other than Dover, who was third quick, the top ten qualifiers went out 23rd in the order on average.
Billy made the most of his front row start in the heat race, leading start to finish. “That’s the first time I’ve won a heat race at Knoxville in quite awhile (June 9, 2007),” he says.
Starting outside row eight of the 20-lap feature event, Billy tried to make something happen early. “I had a killer start and got around several cars,” he remembers. “Randy Anderson got a real bad push, and my visor was full of mud. He was coming up the track right at my front end, and I had to lock up the brakes. Every car I had passed got back by me. We about crashed there.”
The track conditions provided little action back in the pack, while the leaders but on a good show. “I have one of those special Butlerbuilt seats, so I can just rest my head a bit,” Billy jokes. “Unfortunately, I’ve ran in a few boring feature races this year. I started to doze off around lap twelve. It looked like a good race up front at least; I was watching that on the scoreboard as I went down the backstretch.”
Billy followed Randy Anderson for much of the race, and then it was Toni Lutar later on. He decided to attempt a pass on the last lap. “I was behind Lutar there late in the race, and it was hard to pass people the way the track was,” he says. “Finally, I had enough and took a shot when the white flag came out. I wheeled it into turn one, closed my eyes and I was ahead of him in turn two.”
Billy explains why the team didn’t run at Huset’s Speedway last Sunday and Monday. “We needed to fix the motor and we delivered it to Oklahoma,” he explains. “It was a good weekend to do that. That’s why we missed Huset’s. We’ll be back up there soon.”
Billy and the SA Racing #22 team will be back at Knoxville on Saturday.

Keith from Omaha, NE asks: Do you have any routines or superstitions on race day?
Billy answers: I don’t have any superstitions anymore. When I was a young kid racing go-karts, I had some goofy ones. They drove me so crazy that I finally had to quit them. I had a lucky necklace, lucky ring and a lucky rock. I’d drive myself crazy when I forgot them, but then I would go out and win. I finally figured out it didn’t have anything to do with it. So I don’t have any of them. You may even see me down there in the pits eating peanuts with nothing but green underwear on!

Alley’s Anecdotes
In 2003, Billy became the third driver in track history to grab a Knoxville Raceway 360 championship in his rookie season. Billy joined David Hesmer and Brian Brown as the only drivers to accomplish the feat. It wasn’t until June 21, that Billy won his first feature that season, but he ended with five, including a clean sweep of twin features night. He led 40 laps during the season, and topped Jesse Giannetto, Josh Higday, Hesmer and Ed Ergenbright in the standings.

Tornado Alley – Victim of Circumstance!
(Bill W) May 22, 2008 – Many nights in sprint car racing, you’re a victim of circumstance. Often, that is a bad thing. For “Tornado” Billy Alley, positive circumstances resulted in a second place finish at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. On Sunday at Huset’s Speedway, the circumstances dictated a rough night resulting from a simple mechanical gremlin. The Lincoln, Nebraska hot-shoe will be at it again this week with an ambitious four-race schedule planned for the Holiday weekend.
The draw was everything at Knoxville on Saturday. With the wind howling from turn three to turn one most of the sunny day, it didn’t take long for the black clay to surrender to the elements. Luckily for Billy, he drew one of the early numbers (12) for two qualifying laps on the clock. He made the most of it, registering the 5th quick time of the night. “That ended up making our whole night,” he says. “Drawing well made a lot of guys’ night.”
In a racy heat, Billy followed Danny Lasoski into third and the pair cruised behind Mark Dobmeier the rest of the way to earn transfers into the A main event. “Getting through the heat race was a big part of the night,” says Billy. “Not getting through that would have changed the whole complexion of the night.”
The invert was six for the feature, putting the SA Racing #22 on the front row beside Justin Henderson, the pole-sitter. The track surface promised to be a one-lane parade, and it would be a race to turn one. “I knew if I went too hard into turn one on the high side, I’d get shuffled back,” says Billy. “I tried a move to cut turns one and two low and duck under Justin. I almost got it done, but we had to settle into second. It rubbered up, and was a single-file affair, and that was about it.”
A couple cautions came late, and a few were expecting a late move around the top from “Tornado” Alley. “I thought about taking a shot, but I was pretty proud of myself for not doing it,” says Billy. “I’m not a good rubber racer, usually. I normally get impatient in those deals and try something stupid. I knew I didn’t have much tire left, and was cutting it close, so I hung there in line. Justin just didn’t make any mistakes. He drove a good race.”
The team headed for South Dakota and Huset’s Speedway with a ton of confidence, but a simple motor part failed. “We had motor problems,” says Billy. “We didn’t catch what it was in time trials or the heat race. It was a broken spark plug, so the car was running on seven cylinders. We changed a bunch of things and thought we had it fixed, but we didn’t actually take the spark plugs all the way out until before the B, and by then, it was too late to contend.”
The circumstances had reversed in 24 hours. Laboring to 18th quick and a finish in the back of the heat meant the team’s work was cut out for them. “The situation was the opposite from Knoxville,” says Billy. “We timed in bad, and played catch-up the rest of the way. My confidence was sky high going in, but we went out to qualify and the motor doesn’t run. You can’t dwell on something that’s out of your control like that. We had it so tight that it just killed it when the motor wouldn’t run and I had to putt around the bottom.”
Once the spark plug was replaced, Billy stormed to a win in the B going away from row two. With a 21st place start on another rubber-down track, Billy fell in line, coasting to a 14th place finish. “We passed all of those cars in the first couple of laps,” he says of moving up seven spots. “Then once we got going single-file, it was just boring for everyone. We’ve been dialed in at Huset’s. Not the whole way, but we’ve got some more things we’ll try there this week.”
Tentative weekend plans have the team getting the 360 back out on Friday at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska with the ASCS-Midwest series. From there, they will compete at Knoxville on Saturday, and run Sunday and Monday at Huset’s.

Doug Wilson from Knoxville, IA asks: Billy, you mentioned growing up in Lincoln (Nebraska). Some guys in that area never venture towards Knoxville and just stay local in that race area. At what age did you first hear about Knoxville Raceway and what made you decide that you wanted to race there? Thanks for making that tow east and west on Interstate 80.
Billy answers: I started out as a little kid as a race fan. That’s why I like to stay after the races for a long time signing autographs, because I used to be one of those fans. I know that if my dad hadn’t started his own business, I would have never gotten to race. When I was young, probably about first grade, there was a home video of the Knoxville Nationals. I remember making a birthday wish to just go watch the Knoxville Nationals in person. Once I started in sprint cars, I hooked up with Bob “Buns” Richardson, and he had been to Knoxville with Ray Lipsey and some other drivers when he owned a car. It’s a good place to get your name out there, the people are great, it’s fairly close, and if you win there, everyone in the world knows about it. Knoxville does a great job publicizing their drivers. If you would have told me I’d be racing at Knoxville while I was watching those tapes as a kid, I’d have thought you were crazy.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Memorial Day weekend has been good to Billy. In his short career, he’s won three times during the Holiday weekend at three different facilities. In 2002, he bested Ron Love, Rick Ideus, Mike Chadd and Jason Danley at Eagle (NE) Raceway. In 2004, he beat Chadd, Justin Henderson, Dusty Zomer and Danley at the Butler County Speedway near Rising City, Nebraska. In 2006, he won at Knoxville with the 410, beating Skip Jackson, Kerry Madsen, Brian Brown and Lynton Jeffrey!

Bill W Media Monroe, IA USA sprntcar@iowatelecom.netTornado Alley – No Excuses!
(Bill W) May 15, 2008 – Billy Alley is not one to make excuses when things aren’t going right. Such a time came last Friday when the SA Racing team headed to the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa for some Interstate Racing Association action. After a rainout at Knoxville on Saturday dampened plans, the team rebounded in fine fashion at the Huset’s Speedway in South Dakota on Sunday, scoring their first top five finish of the young 410 season.
Billy pulls no punches when talking about his 26th quick, sluggish heat, B and A finishes on Friday at 34. “In a lot of these releases, we say ‘It was a nice day, we had a nice drive down to Burlington. We transferred out of the B, which was great because we got more laps.’”, he says. “What a load of hooey that is. We were terrible, and really have no excuses. We were bad from hot laps to the end of the night. When the racecar is not driven correctly, it’s hard to get the right setup on it.”
The night ended with Billy pulling off during the feature, having not done much on the racetrack. “I don’t know what the deal was, but we weren’t in left field, we were beyond it where they hit homers and we’re all picking dandelions,” he relates. “I really thought we would have a good night going down there, and I wish we could use some of my favorite excuses guys use like the tires sealing over, or the mag box went out, etc., but we can’t! We were looking for some confidence, but left with our heads hung pretty low. When you are off in 410 racing, it shows a lot more than in the 360.”
The Lincoln, Nebraska driver bounced back at Huset’s on Sunday in a big way and with a stout field assembled, registered the 8th quick time of the night. The finish put him outside row two of a heat race he would run away with. “Half the battle is a good mechanic getting me comfortable enough in the racecar to drive it to its max, and that’s what (Bob) ‘Buns’ (Richardson) is good at,” says Billy. “We were able to do that in the heat race. On a heavy bullring we started fourth and won it, which isn’t the ultimate, but it was good for us. You couldn’t jack around, you had to get up on the wheel and I think we did that.”
The car felt good, so the team didn’t feel any changes were needed setup-wise for the finale. “We were loose in the feature; we just left it alone after the heat and didn’t tighten it up,” says the driver. “It was comfortable; we were just off the pace a little bit. We were a fifth place car.” Indeed he was. The fifth place finish is the best for the team in five 2008 410 starts.
Things were going well, and Billy was running second for a time in the Delta Oil/Sterling Physical Therapy #22, but eventually the car got looser and looser and former track champions, Danny Lasoski and Gregg Bakker relegated him to fifth. In fact, the top four finishers were all former Huset’s track champions (winner Mark Dobmeier, Justin Henderson, Lasoski and Bakker). “We were definitely better early when the track had some moisture in it, but as the race went on it got slicker and slicker, and we got looser and looser,” says Billy. “When we were in clean air, we were pretty good, but in lapped traffic it got worse and those two guys got by me. I was waiting for that, because I kept missing my marks too, and about hit the fence twice. It was a top five, not what we’re aiming at ultimately, but something for the team to build on right now.”
The team will join a handful of other competitors who plan on practicing at Knoxville Raceway on Friday night, and then they will run the regular show on Saturday. The team will again make up their minds about a Sunday Huset’s run after that.

Darrell from Chariton, IA asks: What do you think of the nicknames people have given you? Did you have any favorite nicknames growing up?
Billy answers: When I was a kid, a neighbor called me “Billy the Bull”. I kind of liked that when I was wrestling. I’m getting used to this “Tornado” Alley though, I really am. People are starting to call me that…Steve Sinclair and a couple of IRA guys I don’t know called me that last week, so I think it’s really catching on. When I was growing up, I liked “Slammin’” Sammy Swindell and “The Wild Child” Jac Haudenschild, but we really didn’t have too many with the Eagle guys. I saw the “WFO” sticker on local driver Mark Lyons’ car when I was nine years old, so obviously, that stuck with me too.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy is the only driver to lead the 360 Nationals finale from start to finish on two occasions (2004 and 2005). Both wins paid $10,000 to win. His 50 feature laps led, is second on the all-time list to David Hesmer’s 54. Billy qualified for the pole position in 2005, and in 2004, he inherited it with a lap one spin by John Kearney. Billy has competed in the event five times, and in addition to his two wins, he has a 7th and 8th place finish.

Tornado Alley – Bring on the IRA!
(Bill W) May 8, 2008 – By just looking at results, Billy Alley’s weekend may have looked like a bust. Look a little deeper and you’ll see that despite a slight driving error in time trials at Knoxville, he still qualified for the World of Outlaws feature. At Huset’s Speedway, he had one of the fastest cars on the track before being forced to retire. This weekend, Billy will be at it again, racing against the Interstate Racing Association at 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa and Knoxville Raceway on Saturday, before making a decision on whether to hit Huset’s again on Sunday.
With 47 cars in the pits at Knoxville last Saturday, one lap of qualifying was used. With the World of Outlaws, any miscalculation can be costly. “With one lap there is no room for error,” says Billy. “One thing I’ve always been able to do is qualify well, but we didn’t get it done Saturday (24th). I entered at the berm in the turn, and ended up on the cushion. That will always cost you .1 to .15 of a second. That’s a huge difference. I was upset when I crawled out of the car.”
Starting sixth in his heat race, Billy maintained his standing, but unfortunately, only the top five headed for the feature. Wavering in and out of a top four transfer spot after starting sixth in the B, the 2006 Knoxville track champion woke up a bit while battling with Clint Garner. He slid by Clint with two laps to go to seal that battle, and then shot under Justin Henderson for third on the last lap to secure a spot in the feature. “For the first time in awhile, I really sat up in the seat and went to work,” said Billy.
One of the few regulars to qualify for the feature, Billy used the opportunity to get some laps in. The race went 25 laps non-stop, and he would finish 21st in the 26 car field. “The last half of the race, I could have pulled in,” he says. “I wanted to stay out there and get some laps in. We tried to stay out of the fast cars way as best as we could. Hopefully, the next night we’ll be up there with them.”
It was on to Huset’s Speedway located just outside of Brandon South Dakota on Sunday. The track is one of Billy’s favorites. After a blistering fast hot lap session, things didn’t go so well in qualifying (14th). Billy explained why. “We learned something right there. When we were hot lapping, we used the tires we had from Knoxville. They are a lot softer than the Huset’s spec tire. That changed the whole performance of the car, and we had the same setup as hot laps. By heat time, we had that taken care of.”
Starting outside of row one in the heat, Billy won going away, and was ready for the main event. Starting seventh, he surged forward immediately. “We were racing in close quarters with the 28 car (Mitch Runge) for fifth or so,” says the Lincoln, Nebraska driver. “Then the red came out for Terry (McCarl). Our nose-wing was about falling off. We have some great equipment, but when you unload in the infield at Huset’s and the trailer is outside the track, that doesn’t help much. I want to thank (360 driver) Justin Jacobsma, who lent us a front wing. We just didn’t have the time to get it put on right, and it didn’t have the same brackets. We took too long, so they sent us to the back. We pulled in the work area, and the officials left me there because we hadn’t been the cause of the yellow. It was my intention to make a run from the back, but it didn’t work out that way!” Billy was officially scored 17th in the feature.
Friday, Billy will return to a place he felt a win got away last September, as the Interstate Racing Association visits 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa. After leading most of the 410 feature there last September, mechanical problems sidelined him. He’s hoping for redemption.
Saturday the IRA visits Knoxville, and following that, the SA Racing team will make a decision on running whether to run Huset’s again on Sunday!

Amy from Sioux Falls asks: It seems you’ve gotten faster at Huset’s (Speedway) over the years. What is the key to getting around there?
Billy answers: We’re still learning there, but patience and momentum are the two biggest things. If you jack around on the bottom, you can get blitzed. That’s not to say you don’t need to run the bottom too, because that’s where you usually need to pass people. I like riding the high side there. You have to be comfortable or it will eat you up!

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has had a lot of success in Interstate Racing Association (IRA) series events despite limited starts. He has eight top ten finishes in nine career feature events with the group. His best finish was arguably a fifth place run in the 2005 $10,000 to win Summer Classic. Billy drove the family #22, trailing Kerry Madsen, Brian Brown, Sammy Swindell and Ricky Logan at the checkers.

Tornado Alley – Mother Nature is Rolling!
(Bill W) April 24, 2008 – Many sprint car drivers are restless in the Midwest right now, and few more so than Billy Alley. Two straight weekends of bad weather have sidetracked racing plans, and he’d like to unleash the SA Racing #22 rather than watch the Weather Channel again. This week’s plans include running with the big boys. The World of Outlaws are scheduled to visit Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota on Friday and the Knoxville Raceway Saturday.
Huset’s banked 3/8 mile oval was the site of Billy’s first 410 win in the United States. On July 3, 2005, he started seventh in the family #22, and after battling with leader Jake Peters for a couple of laps, took the point for good on lap 19. “I was definitely in a rhythm that night,” he remembers. “We had her rolling around Huset’s pretty good. That was a special night for us.”
Billy shares one legend’s opinion of racing at Huset’s and Knoxville. “Like Doug Wolfgang says, if you can run Knoxville and Huset’s, you can run anywhere in the country comfortably, because of the contrast in the tracks. Huset’s is the type of place that if you’re not comfortable, it will show right away.”
The fans in South Dakota welcome Billy every time he travels up I-29. “Huset’s is a place where I’ve gained a lot of fans,” he says. “Most of them are pretty loyal. I get a lot of e-mails from there. When I ran second at Eagle earlier this year, a bunch of fans came down from there just to watch me.”
Motor problems plagued him last year when the WoO came to Huset’s in July. “It’s a different place,” says Billy. “When the Outlaws come, they have a different kind of fast there, and that’s what we hope we have on Friday. After running a few weekly shows, they show you how fast they really are. Every time you race, you learn though. Last year we raced a lot. Hopefully, now we can settle down with one team here for several years. That’s the only way a guy can compete with the best, is by settling down with a team for awhile.”
Billy is also anticipating his first shot at Knoxville with SA Racing. “I’m excited to get Knoxville,” he says. “I really wish we could have gotten it in last week before the ‘Guns’ come in. That’s what was dealt, so that’s what we’ll do. We’ve got a new car and new stuff that will be rolling around the raceway…granted I have a lot of laps there and we should be comfortable there, but if we’re a little off, you don’t have much time to make up for that with two laps (time trials) dictating the rest of your night.”
Sometimes Billy looks back to a fourth place run he had with the WoO at Knoxville in June of 2006. “Ricky Logan told me once if you’re going through a bad spell, just get out some tapes of when things were going well,” says Billy. “My mom tapes me every week, so she has to watch me through the camera instead of live…I went back and watched that race. That’s one of the most fun tapes for me to watch. It does show you that you can do it, and most of this deal is about believing in yourself.”
That is, if Mother Nature cooperates!

Randy Wilson of Knoxville asks: I understand that you had quite a sports career in high school. Could you fill us in on some (or all) of what you did? I think it would be fascinating for fans to know that part of your life.
Billy answers: I was hoping my high school career would somehow lead to a college education. My high school (Lincoln Southeast) was a huge football school. I graduated with around 900 students, which definitely helped our sports program. If you were in the Lincoln area, and wanted to play football at the next level, you went to Southeast. I had pretty good success there. I played on the varsity three out of my four years, and we won the state title those years. Two of those years I didn’t help much because of my knees (torn ACLs). My senior year, I was a captain. I played linebacker next to Barrett Ruud, who currently plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I didn’t have the talent he had, but I tried just as hard. My injuries really slowed me down from playing in college.
I wrestled from fourth grade on. The doctors said I wouldn’t be able to wrestle my junior year, because of my knees…but true story, I parked in the handicap parking spot, went into the state tournament and took fifth place. My senior year, after tearing my knee up in football again, wrestling was the only thing to look forward to. I came back and for one week I was ranked #1 in the state at 171 pounds. In the conference meet, I tore my ACL in the conference meet, and that’s when this racing thing sort of built me back up.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has had success at Huset’s Speedway. Despite only winning on one occasion, in his 21 feature starts there (20 have been in a 410), he has finished in the top ten 19 times. He finished in the top seven 89% of the time at the raceway last year alone. His best WoO finish at Knoxville was fourth on June 23, 2006, when he trailed Joey Saldana, Donny Schatz and Brooke Tatnell to the stripe. He also finished fourth in a Knoxville Nationals prelim on August 12, 2005 trailing Shane Stewart, Tatnell and Danny Lasoski. He was the National’s second highest point getter that year.

(Bill W) April 17, 2008 – As Billy Alley embarks on the 2008 Knoxville Raceway campaign starting this Saturday night; he will bring something old and something new with him. The SA Racing Team has been formed recently, but many of the components have been with the Lincoln, Nebraska sprint car driver since his career began in August 2001. Before the team hits Knoxville on Saturday, they’ll run at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood in an ASCS-Midwest vs. ASCS-Northern Plains tilt.
SA Racing was formed a few months ago, and has been a blessing, in part, because many of those Billy has had success with in the past, are back with him. “Partnering with Shane is new and SA Racing is something we’re really proud of,” he says. “But my dad and (Bob) “Buns” (Richardson) and Allyn (‘Ace’) Shiveley were there before when we ran the #22. So from that aspect, things are clicking a lot faster than they would if everyone was new.”
One new thing is a JEI chassis. “The racecar is new, so it may take us a little while to get comfortable with the car, but Barry Jackson from JEI has done a lot to help us,” says the 2006 Knoxville Raceway track champion. “We have a great starting point! Hopefully, I can get my elbows up a little bit and be comfortable. Once you’re up to speed and comfortable at Knoxville, then you can start moving around a little bit and doing some damage!”
The competition in the 410 class will be as fierce as any time in the track’s history. “It’s great for the sport of 410 sprint car racing,” says Billy. “A lot of people say it’s dying out, but on Saturday nights at Knoxville this year, it’s not going to feel like it! Knoxville is special. The facilities spoil you. The way they run the show spoils you. The fan support is always great! It’s just a friendly atmosphere. That’s why people keep coming back. You can get a lot of publicity there. It’s hard to make any money in this sport, but you can do decent there on a local level.”
Billy is determined to make the most of his opportunity in 2008. “Competition is only going to make us faster when the Outlaws come to town,” he says. “It’s going to make us all better racers. I know we have good equipment, and I have confidence in my driving ability. We need to focus on our team and what we’re doing. I don’t have to prove anything to anyone but myself. It’s been awhile since I’ve stood in Victory Lane over there (Knoxville).”
The objectives at Knoxville are simple. “My goal is to be competitive there every week,” he determines. “If we can get that mindset, we’ll be a team to be reckoned with. A lot of it is mental. If you don’t think you can win when you strap in, I don’t care how good the car is, you’re not going to win!”
With three wins and six top fives in seven feature starts at NRP, Billy is confident heading into Friday night as well. “I enjoy racing there, and I’ve had some success there,” he says. “Usually, Ed Kosiski has a racy track for us there. I look forward to letting that new Wesmar motor of ours open up a little bit. It will be one of the higher momentum tracks we’ve been on, and I think that will play to our strength.”

If you are too far from Knoxville to make it on Saturday night, Billy’s races will be on the internet at www.HoseheadsRadio.com all season long! Join “Hot” Rod Pattison and Bill W for all the action starting at 7:30 p.m. CST. SA Racing is a proud partner of Hoseheads Radio this season!
Billy on the Radio
Billy will be making Monday morning appearances all race season long on KJJY (92.5 FM). He’s looking forward to talking about racing…and other things. “Because it is a country station, I think we’ll talk hunting,” he says of his love of the outdoors. “I think the people in Iowa can appreciate that!”

Mark in Des Moines asks: What are the differences in the JEI chassis compared to other cars you’ve driven in the past?
Billy answers: It’s a tighter (handling) racecar. We’ve only raced the 410 one time (Pevely), and I was pretty comfortable. We were freer than we had been before. It seems to get into the racetrack a lot better. These cars have a balance to it, and if it’s at a point where the balance is off, it doesn’t matter what kind of car you have. That was our problem earlier this year.

Bill W Media Monroe, IA USA sprntcar@iowatelecom.netTornado Alley – Confident Cornhusker!
(Bill W) April 10, 2008 – A feeling of confidence surrounded Billy Alley after last weekend. It was a feeling he hadn’t felt in some time. Racing at your home track helps, and a strong showing at Eagle Raceway last Sunday sealed the deal. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend was taking the 410 out for its maiden voyage against the World of Outlaws in Pevely, Missouri on Saturday. Although the night ended after getting into another competitor and tipping over, each time the car hit the track it got faster.
Eagle’s Icebreaker Challenge was just that, an icebreaker. A cold, blustery breeze greeted competitors and fans alike. After an impressive heat race run despite typical daytime track conditions, Billy drew a spot inside row three for the main event. “I was in the preferred line starting inside of Brian Brown,” he says. “The line worked to my advantage, and I was able to hold the spot. We were fourth by turn one.”
World of Outlaws regular, Terry McCarl, made the long journey from Pevely just like Billy, and he started on the pole of the feature and took off. “McCarl got way out there,” says Billy. “I was able to get by one guy who got out of the rubber, and got around on the high side of the other. When I got into second, McCarl had a straightaway on me, but by the caution (seven laps to go), I was within a car length.”
Bill wishes the stoppage hadn’t occurred, and settled for second behind McCarl and in front of Brown. “If that caution hadn’t of come out, I would have had a lot better shot at him,” he laments. “We were getting in lapped traffic. I don’t know if I could have passed him, but he looked like he may have been getting tight. That caution came out and gave him a clean race track, and it’s tough to beat him in open air.”
The race completed a weekend that saw great strides for the new SA Racing team and especially its driver. “I felt a little bit of cockiness and confidence coming back,” says the Lincoln, Nebraska native. “You can’t fake intensity, cockiness or confidence…you have to feel it. It was a feeling I hadn’t had in a long time. My race car is starting to sing to me a little bit. It was the kind of run we needed, and everyone was excited. We felt good. There was a nice field there, and Terry McCarl and Brian Brown could go anywhere in the country and win a 360 race.”
After years of sitting in the stands at Eagle Raceway as a youth, Billy knows the persistence needed for the fans to stick around on Sunday. “I want to thank the folks at Eagle, and especially the fans who came out,” he says. “It wasn’t the ideal day to be watching a race by any means, but there they were!”
Pevely
With an opportunity to race a few miles from home with his 360, the SA Racing team elected to get the 410 in gear about 7 ½ hours from home against the World of Outlaws. I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri is a 1/3 mile high-banked oval that can be tricky to get around. Throw in the fact that it was the team’s first time out with a 410, and you can expect some growing pains.
Despite all the obstacles, the team persevered and Billy was happy with the results. “Every time we went on the track and made changes, the car adapted to it,” he says. “We were running against the best in the country, so to run a new car as well as we did was good. I’d really like to thank Barry Jackson from JEI chassis. I’ve been on the phone with him every week, and he’s given us some great advice. He takes pride in making sure this car is fast.”
After registering the 18th quick time of the night on a slick track, Billy started outside row three of his heat. Adjustments by Bob “Buns” Richardson and the rest of the team netted a solid heat race finish (fifth) that put them outside row nine for the feature event. Rolling around the bottom in good fashion, Billy came upon WoO regular Chad Hillier, whose car was sideways in turn four. Unable to avoid contact, Billy tipped over. “I just wanted to get some laps there, and go 40 laps,” he says. “We got it too tight for the feature; I think towards the end, we would have been good. We could have moved up through there a little bit. Our flip got the wings and the front axle. It didn’t event bend the radius rods, so no major damage.”
Despite the spill, Billy felt good about the team’s first night out in the 410. “The good thing about Pevely was, when we left, everyone was up,” he says. “I hadn’t felt like that in a 410 in a long time. Usually when you’ve gotten upside down, it’s a long drive home and you’re almost in tears. It felt good to get around the track the way we did.”
Unfortunately, the team’s plans of running two nights at Nebraska Raceway Park this weekend were postponed to August 18. The team will turn their focus towards that night, as well as their quest for another Knoxville track championship, beginning August 19.

Chad in Sioux Falls asks: What do you remember about your first win? (Eagle Raceway – September 1, 2001)
Billy answers: I remember that race like it was yesterday. It wasn’t like Doug Wolfgang. I read that he can’t remember winning the 1977 Nationals. I remember being out there racing and it was like I woke up from the zone I was in. I remember passing for the lead in turn two and thinking to myself, ‘I’m gonna win this race!’ That’s the feeling I’m looking to get back every time I’m out on the track. I was out their singing a song and not thinking about anything else. I wasn’t thinking period. That’s what you want.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has an impressive record at Nebraska Raceway Park. In seven feature starts there, he has three wins and six top fives. He’s never finished outside of the top ten. He won the 2002 Lawrence Ideus Memorial, besting Jake Peters, Jason Danley, Mike Boston and Bruce Divis at NRP.

Tornado Alley – Eagle’s Nest!
(Bill W) March 27, 2008 – After a two-year absence, Billy Alley will be back on the track where everything started, Eagle Raceway. The 1/3 mile oval is close to home for the Lincoln, Nebraska driver, and it will play host to the Ice Breaker Challenge for 360 sprints this Saturday and Sunday night. A Friday night practice session will allow the 2002 Eagle Raceway champion and SA Racing to unleash their 410 engine for the first time this season on a track in which they are comfortable.
Billy grew up watching heroes like JJ Riggins and Ray Lipsey at Eagle before driving with success there himself. He relishes the opportunity to return to competition at Eagle. “I’m excited to be racing at home,” he says. “We haven’t raced there since the World of Outlaws show in 2006. Usually when we go there, we’re pretty good. We’ve done well when the Outlaws have come, so hopefully, I can at least make the A main this week!”
Six of Billy’s last seven races at Eagle have been in a 410 with the World of Outlaws. He has more than held his own with the WoO at his home track, posting three eleventh place finishes as well as a 12th against the best in the business. His last 360 action at the track came when he drove the Mark Burch #1m to a sixth place finish in the Jim Eckley Memorial in June of 2006.
Billy’s partnership with Shane Sterling eases his mind about recent struggles and keeps his eye on what’s most important…what lies ahead. “Eagle is the next race, so that’s what I have to focus on. My partner (Sterling) makes everything easy for us. He understands what’s going on with our early struggles here, and he works to keep everyone ‘up’. That’s what our team needs right now, because we’re not used to struggling.”
A Step Forward in OKC
The team traveled to the Spring Nationals at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City last weekend for a two-night show. Again, 50+ of the best drivers in sprint racing were gathered and starving action. Being a tick off is going to have a huge impact in that kind of scenario, and that was the case for the team. “We struggled quite a bit again,” says Billy. “We tried to go back to more of a normal set-up for us from what we had in Dallas, and it still didn’t work too well. Friday night it was heavy and we kind of finished where we started in both races.”
A fifth place finish on Friday in the heat, and a disappointing third place tally in the B, left Billy one spot out of a feature transfer. Saturday saw a bit of luck in the heat race. “We did get the car better on Saturday, but it wasn’t where we need it to be,” says Billy. “We can’t blame it on the draw. Kaleb Johnson, who’s a great go-kart racer up in Sioux Falls and is going to be famous some day, drew for me. We started on the pole and by the time we hit the flag stand, we were fifth. We had some stumbling problems at the start of the race. Luckily, we got back to fourth, and then Terry McCarl dropped out with engine problems and Natalie Sather had some problems on the last lap, so we got back to second.”
The fortunate circumstances set Billy outside of row eight for the main event. “In the feature, we stumbled back to 22nd by lap two,” he says. “I just couldn’t get any forward drive from the car at the beginning. At the end of the race, (Bob) ‘Buns’ (Richardson) was really positive about how the car looked. I was the last car on the lead lap (finishing 20th), and Jason Johnson was behind us, but couldn’t get around. We made our first feature of the year, so we were happy. Of course, if you would have told me that a month ago, I would have thought that was terrible.”
The team continues to try to get their Wesmar power hooked to the track. “We’ve had some trouble with the motor on the starts so far,” says Billy. “‘Buns’ changed the whole thing around, and we may have gone a little too far on Saturday. It’s more of a hesitation without a smooth power band, and the tires are spinning out from underneath me. It’s a beast of a motor, but we need to find a way to get that power to the track. When we get to some momentum racetracks, I think we’re going to take off with this motor.”
Of course, there is the issue of the tough competition faced so far with a new team. “That ASCS deal is tough,” admits Billy. “There are guys that I didn’t know, and I still don’t. I do know what a lot of their tail tanks look like now though! There were a lot of fast cars there, so we have to put that in perspective, but we’re never going to be good with it until we’re in front of them!”

Julie in Lincoln, NE asks: You seemed to have immediate success at Eagle Raceway. I think you won the third time you had run there. What is it about Eagle that suits your style?
Billy answers: I grew up at Eagle, and had been watching guys race there since I was little. Believe it or not, I’m a listener. Listening to JJ Riggins and Ray Lipsey, and Bob Richardson definitely helped me get around that place. A lot of the credit goes to Bob. He not only found my style right away, but knew how to set up a car for that race track. It wasn’t like we were going somewhere that no one had ever been.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy goes to Eagle having won nine times in 41 feature starts there (22%). He also has 20 top fives (49%) and 25 top tens (61%) at the banked 1/3 mile oval. The 2002 Eagle Raceway champion as a rookie, the track was a big reason he won National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum 360 Rookie of the Year honors that season. He won six of his features at the track during the 2002 season.

Tornado Alley – SA Racing is Born!
(Bill W) March 20, 2008 – A few months ago, Billy Alley wasn’t sure what he was going to do. The Lincoln, Nebraska sprint car driver and 2006 Knoxville Raceway track champion was going to have to piece something together to race anywhere in 2008. Enter Pleasant Hill Iowa’s Shane Sterling. Sterling had become acquainted with Billy during last year’s racing season, and the two had hit it off. One phone call from Shane to Billy two months ago set up what appears to be a force to be reckoned with for some time to come!
The offer included everything Billy needed in a race team. The newly formed partnership encompassed a transporter, a hand chosen racing team, and parts. SA Racing was born! “SA Racing evolved two months ago, and we’ve been putting racecars together ever since,” says Billy. “We’ve definitely got good equipment and good people behind us, so I believe with the hard work we’re putting in, we’re going to get results.”
The team has lined up an ambitious schedule that focuses on another Knoxville Raceway track championship. Sprinkled in are Midwest 410 dates with the World of Outlaws and ASCS 360 races where they can be plugged in. The team headed down to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas last weekend to shake their new JEI/Wesmar powered sprinter out.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go well, and that didn’t set well with one of the most competitive drivers out there. “We always have high expectations, but our journey to Devil’s Bowl was tough,” says Billy. “The competition was fierce, and they definitely got the best of us. We were in left field with the car, to be honest. We got a little away from our game plan. It was a good learning experience for us, I think. In the past, we’ve always been competitive with the 360’s so that made it even a little bit tougher.”
It was evident that the car was loose on the banked ½ mile in the prelim on Friday. “We got caught off-guard because the car was real real free on Friday,” says Billy. “We tried to make up for that on Saturday, but the racetrack changed quite a bit. I think everyone may have been a little nervous, and we kind of got ahead of ourselves a bit. Then we were playing catch-up, and that’s never good in sprint car racing!”
Many in the Midwest do not utilize the JEI chassis, making it hard to bounce around ideas on a local level. The Pennsylvania based car is relatively new, but it is a proven winner. “I chatted with Barry Jackson of JEI this week, and he wondered what was wrong with the car (in Texas),” says Billy. “He related that there aren’t too many people running 360 JEI cars out there. We know Lucas Wolfe was really successful in one in Pennsylvania last year, so it can be done, and we’ll figure it out soon with his help and our expertise as well.”
When things don’t go the best, the best thing to do is get right back out on the track and that’s what SA Racing will be doing this weekend. The Spring Nationals at the State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City will be the host for the American Sprint Cars on Tour series this Friday and Saturday night. “We’re really looking forward to getting back on the track at Oklahoma City,” says Billy. “The thing I remember about the smaller 3/8 track is that it’s not round. It’s got a different shape to it, so it’s a little different. You have to be on top of your setup to go good there.”
In addition to Sterling, team members include Billy’s reunion with crew chief Bob “Buns” Richardson. Other crew members include Billy’s father Stewart, Michael Fuller, Seth Boynton and Allyn “Ace” Shively. “We’ve been working all week on things, so we should be good to go in OKC!” says Billy.

Bill W asks: I know you are a big deer hunter, how did the hunting season go for you this Winter?
Billy answers: Deer season went well. I think I was out in the deer stand 57 times. Most people keep notes on the racing, but I actually keep notes while I’m deer hunting. Temperature, wind direction, when the rut is starting, going on, or ending, I’ve got it all. If anyone wants to know what’s up in Nebraska deer hunting, just let me know! I had some luck last season. I shot a 140 class buck with my bow. I also got a nice one with the rifle. We’ve got some really good ground to hunt on, so we’re lucky.

Alley’s Anecdotes
Billy has done more at the age of 24 than most sprint car driver’s achieve in their entire career. In addition to being the Knoxville track champion in 2006, he was the 360 track champion there in 2003, the New Zealand Grand Prix Winner in 2005, he has won two 360 Nationals, has been named both the National 410 and 360 Rookie of the Year (’04 and ’03), won the ASCS-Midwest crown in 2005, and was the 2002 Eagle Raceway Champion and Rookie of the Year. Billy has won 38 features out of 260 (15%), and has been in the top ten in 185 (71%) of those events.
